National Carers Week: Celebrating the Heart of Support

Each year, Australians come together to acknowledge the people who quietly provide care and support to those who need it most. From 12-18 October, National Carers Week celebrates the remarkable contribution of unpaid carers, the family members and friends who provide daily assistance to people living with a disability, chronic illness, mental health conditions, or the effects of ageing.

More than 2.6 million Australians take on this role, often balancing it alongside work, study or other responsibilities. This week is a reminder of just how significant their contribution is, not only to the individuals they support, but to our community as a whole.

What is National Carers Week?

National Carers Week is an annual initiative led by Carers Australia and supported by the Australian Government. It aims to increase awareness and understanding of the role, highlight the challenges carers face, and encourage greater community appreciation for the people who provide care every day, often without recognition or financial reward.

While professional and paid carers are a vital part of Australia’s aged care and health system, this week focuses on the millions of unpaid carers whose efforts make independent living possible for many Australians.

Across the country, communities, workplaces, and organisations take part in events that celebrate carers, share their stories, and provide information on the support available to them.

The Role of an Unpaid Carer

Caring for someone can take many forms. It might involve helping with transport, preparing meals, providing companionship, or managing appointments and medication. In many cases, it’s also about offering emotional reassurance and being a consistent source of comfort and understanding.

While each carer’s relationship is different, what they share is a deep commitment to another person’s well-being. This support allows countless Australians to continue living safely and comfortably in their own homes, connected to the people and places they love.

Why Recognition Matters

Caring for loved ones can be deeply meaningful, but it can also be demanding. Many carers put the needs of others first, sometimes at the expense of their own well-being. National Carers Week is a moment to pause, to acknowledge their impact, and to remind carers that they deserve support too.

Recognising carers helps raise awareness of the importance of balance, ensuring carers have access to respite, community programs, and services that make their role more sustainable. It also encourages conversations about inclusion, equity, and how society can better support those who support others.

Supporting Carers Through Community and Services

Carers don’t have to do it alone. Government-funded programs such as the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) and Home Care Packages (HCPs) can provide services that ease the daily load, from personal care and domestic help to transport and respite options.

Health professionals like physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and nurses can also play an important role in supporting both the person receiving care and their carer. By improving mobility, home safety, and overall well-being, these services help create more independence for the person being cared for and greater peace of mind for the carer.

Accessing the right mix of support can make a meaningful difference, giving carers time to rest, reconnect, and recharge while knowing their loved one is receiving quality, compassionate care.

How We Can All Play a Part

National Carers Week is also an invitation for everyone to take part. Whether it’s thanking a carer you know, offering a helping hand, or simply taking a moment to understand the challenges carers face, small gestures can go a long way.

It’s about creating communities where carers feel recognised and valued, not just this week, but throughout the year.

A Message of Gratitude

Carers are the quiet strength in many lives, helping others maintain independence, dignity, and connection every day. Their care, patience, and resilience form the heart of our communities.

This National Carers Week, we take a moment to acknowledge them, to say thank you, to listen, and to keep building a world that supports carers as much as they support others.
